Vols Beat American
It was a tight one the whole way, but the Vols were able to pull away in the waning minutes, winning the game 72-57. Jajuan Smith led the Vols with 19 points, while Wayne Chism chipped in on the boards coming away with 7 rebounds and 16 points. Tennessee got steady play out of Tyler Smith, while Chris Lofton couldn't find his stroke. American's Garrison Carr finished with 26 for the Eagles hitting shots with people in his face. Tennessee got pounded on the boards as they were outrebounded 39-27. This game was special for the Vols, as they set a school record getting to 30 wins on the season. Despite the scare, the Vols persevered and hit the free throws when it counted. The Vols will try to get to 31, Sunday, when they take on the winner of the South Alabama vs. Butler game.
Tennessee vs. Butler
The Butler Bulldogs handled the South Alabama Jaguars 81-61 in the game following Tennessee. Bruce Pearl took notes as he prepares for a team that the Vols saw last year, in the preseason NIT. Tennessee lost to the Bulldogs last year, as they were completely slowed down and taken out of their game. The game will be Sunday and most likely at 2:30 PM ET. The blowout over South Alabama ties the fourth-largest first-round win by a No. 7 seed since seeding began in 1979.
