Vols Power Over Southern Miss

The 2007 home opener was a success for the Vols. The gameThe Vols offense was on spot tonight as Erik Ainge connected with his wide recievers for two touchdowns and Arian Foster ran two more in.

Ainge was 23-out-of-36 on the night with Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe hauling in touchdowns. Lucas Taylor also had a big game with five catches and 118 yards receiving. The highlight of the first half was Briscoe's 5-yard touchdown pass with just 41 seconds left, that sent the Vols into the half with a 17-16 lead. The second half, the defense stepped up forcing three fumbles on the night. The Vols defense held the Golden Eagles to have a three of 16 night on thrid down. They also held star runningback Damion Fletcher to just 37 yards in 11 carries. After a huge touchdown by the Vols, a Southern Miss fumble on the kickoff return,recovered by former Farragut High School standout Nick Reveiz. The Vols were again in business at the Golden Eagles' 45. Back

up kicker Daniel Lincoln was able to knock in a 47 yarder and put the Vols up 37-19. He was also able to add 36 and 38 yarders. Xavier Mitchell was also back this week on defense after last week's concussion.

Antonio Gaines was hurt midway through the first quarter, and his knee injury will be evaluated after the game.
